Users with be given sane-airscan by default on Mint 21.x. They have been freed from installing vendor drives, which have to be used with legacy/classic printers. They have also future-proofed their printing against the day (about two years form now) when CUPS ceases to support drivers.Īs far as driverless scanning is concerned, I have never encountered any user here who had any problem or failure in using sane-airscan with simple-scan and xsane. Many of those with a modern MFP have benefited from being introduced to driverless printer. I would hope my extensive experience of working with many users on this forum would count. My enthusiasm is based on argument and the direction that printing and printers have been taking for some years. They have chipped toner system which need verification when you insert a new one, without hplip you cannot do that with printers only connected via USB instead of the network. So I get to test them with driverless and the results do not tend to be good with MFPs not being able to scan at all including ones made since 2012 and some won't print either (usb, no network) without hplip. I have spent hours downloading versions of HP Smart (works OK as long as you dont want 2-sided scanning), HP Scan Extended (required for 2-sided ADF scanning), HP Print Scan Doctor, Drivers and other recommended bits of software. I then successfully experimented a fairly simple solution by installing HPlip-gui (despite HPlip already installed by default, I believe). I did find it in Software Manager (shown as not installed), and by which ippusbxd in the terminal I had also found it not to be there. In the limited hour time I had to search, I came across no info on how to reinstall it if needed. I came in online search across rather long, complicated, and not very clear pages and forum conversations dealing with such a problem, including often, for instance, a recommendation to purge something called ippusbxd. Unable to start scan." I am no longer sure which exact phrase) Unable to connect to scanner." (or maybe "Failed to Scan. Yes, they both saw and reported the HP hardware, but when trying to scan instantly gave an error: "Failed to Scan. The two scanner applications I tried however both failed. The HP DeskJet 4100e printer/scanner could easily be used to print via a USB cable (very difficult to set up wireless printing on Linux).
